Voice Switch Simulator:

The Voice Switch Simulator (VSS) is designed to provide an audio and control/status interface equivalent to Voice Switching and Control Equipment (VSCE) used in the National Airspace System (NAS).

The VSS was developed for ACB-560, the NEXCOM Group at the William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The purpose of the VSS is to support development of the Ground Network Interface (GNI) subsystem which is part of NEXCOM. In addition, the VSS will be used at WJHTC as part of the test bed for the Engineering Demonstration Model (EDM). Currently two vendors are developing EDMs under the Rapid Preliminary Development Effort (RPDE). EDM testing is scheduled for October of 2004.

The VSS reuses the Voice Channel Module (VCM) hardware platform to host application specific software that provides Voice Switch interface functionality. In addition to uplink and downlink audio, functions such as Push-to-Talk, Main/Standby Select, Mute, etc. and their corresponding confirmation signals are accommodated. An interface for Back-Up Emergency Communications (BUEC) functions is not provided at this time. The VSS is packaged in a VME chassis and configured as two positions.
